Carl Daniel Wilson's Arrival

It's crazy to think that Carl has been in our lives for 6 weeks now. I want to have a record of his birth story so here goes nothing.

Carl you were a week late and Mom was going nuts. I was scheduled to be induced the night of Thursday March 28 but was still hoping that you would come naturally. Thursday morning at 4 am, I thought that my water had broken. At 11 am your Dad and I went to the hospital although no contractions had started. Your Grandma and Grandpa Olsen were worried and convinced us to go in. We were admitted but come to find out my water hadn't broken so we left. We ate at Subway because I was super hungry and I couldn't eat in the hospital. Dad had to work from 4 until 10 pm that night so our good friend Sara Lundskog came with Mom to the hospital. Mom called at 6 pm and they said they would call back when I could come into be induced. At 7 pm I called again and found out that they could take me. Sara and I ate a quick dinner of lasagna and drove off to the hospital.

After checking in, they started me on Pitocin and an IV drip, exactly the opposite of what Dad and I had been hoping for. Gladly Dad got off work early and was at the hospital by 9:45 pm. Sara went home and we watched Wreck-It-Ralph to take my mind off the contractions. The movie finished at midnight and I couldn't take the pain. Dr. Blackett broke your water and Mom had an epidural. After that was finished your Dad and I took a 'nap' from 1 am to 3 am. The nurse came in at 3 am and tried to find your heartbeat with the monitors. After about 10 minutes nurses from all over started coming into our room. Your heart rate was 60 bpm (extremely low) and you were stressed from the hour long contraction my uterus had been in due to the Pitocin. Mom was stabbed three times with a needle, injecting drugs in used to stop contractions. About 4 am you finally settled down and the nurses left. I had to lay on my right side until 7:30 am. That was extremely painful, but it was the only way you would keep your heart rate up. Mom's labor and delivery nurse Candis came in and let Mom move to her left side. She propped my leg up so you would turn around and face my tailbone. Mom and Dad slept until 8:45 when Mom got the go ahead to start pushing.

Dad was a great help to Mom while she pushed. He pushed on Mom's leg and also fed her ice chips to keep her mouth from drying out. At 11:15 am Dr. Fowers finally showed up. Everyone in the room began teasing Mom about having to use the forceps to get you out. But at 11:38 am you finally emerged with Mom and Dad watching. It was amazing! Sadly some meconium came out with you. The doctors took you over to suck your lungs out and clean you off. Dad followed you while Mom stayed put and her doctor helped her recover. After you were all clean everyone left so Mom and Dad could have some time alone with you. You started to breastfeed and did amazing. You latched on naturally, I was so happy. Then the NICU doctors came back in and gave you shots and eye drops. Grandma and Grandpa Olsen and Uncle Tanner then came in to see you for the first time. Pictures were taken then Mom and Dad were wheeled up to the recovery room. Life was grand and you were born! We love you Carl!

You had a lot of other visitors while in the hospital too: Sara Lundskog, Great Grandpa and Grandma Dearden, Grandpa and Grandma Wilson, Aunt Cami and Megan. We brought you home on Easter Sunday. You were such a pill, crying during dinner and all sorts of mischief. We love you all the same though. Next post we'll talk about your first month here in the world.

Love,
Mom and Dad
